Energy Remedies
From LoveToKnow Herbs
Everyone can use good energy remedies from time to time. The great news is there are a lot of different herbs and supplements that can be helpful when your energy level is low.
Ginseng
One of the most popular herbs for energy out there is ginseng, which is said to be stimulating to the cardiovascular system, promoting heart health and a healthy blood pressure.
It's also beneficial for the nervous system, helping to relieve stress and bring more focus to the mind. Siberian ginseng in particular is sometimes used by athletes to improve performance and endurance. It also helps to increase stamina and improve your response to stress.
This herb may also be helpful for giving the immune system a boost, making it less likely you'll get sick and helping you to recover more quickly if you do. It's also said to be helpful for people with chronic fatigue syndrome, helping people with this illness to concentrate and have higher levels of attention.
Gotu Kola
One of the most popular energy remedies from the Indian healing tradition is gotu kola, a bitter herb that comes from a creeping vine. It is said to have anti-inflammatory properties and help improve blood flow through the body, which can give you a feeling of increased energy.
It is also used as a treatment for the mental decline associated with old age and Alzheimer's disease because it helps to regulate the use of oxygen in the brain, leading to better mental focus and concentration for people of all ages.
Cayenne
Cayenne pepper, just like you would put on your food to give it a spicy kick, can give you energy levels a boost as well. Cayenne is great for improving the blood circulation, which can give you a feeling of more energy and alertness.
It's also sometimes used by athletes to improve athletic performance, and to some extent it can keep you from developing heat stress when working outside.
Cayenne is a wonder that's also great for the digestion, boosts metabolism, removes the painful sensations associated with arthritis and may even relieve the pain of a migraine, which can certainly boost your energy.
Like other culinary herbs, you can just make an effort to eat more foods with cayenne pepper on them or take supplements, but check with your doctor if you have liver problems before you start taking cayenne on a regular basis.
Other Herbal Energy Remedies
Of course there are many other herbal supplements that are thought to be beneficial as energy remedies. Here are just a few more you might want to try:
- Burdock: A blood purifier and body detoxifier, burdock helps keep blood sugar levels even throughout the day, which can keep you from feeling that mid-afternoon crash.
- Dandelion: Another blood purifier, dandelion is great for people who have low energy due to anemia (the leaves are high in potassium and iron). It can also stimulate the appetite and improve digestion.
- Dong quai: If you're feeling low energy because of PMS, the traditional Chinese remedy dong quai can help. It also seems to cut back on cramping and migraines associated with your time of the month, which is sure to make you feel more chipper.
- Ginger: Eating ginger or taking supplements warms the body up, bringing you more energy. It's great for treatment of arthritis symptoms, inflammation and pain, and it helps treat nausea (perfect for low-energy expectant moms).
- Hawthorn: The circulatory system is aided by hawthorn, and it's also used to treat age-related memory problems. It's also been used to treat ADD in children by reducing restlessness, anxiety and acting out.
Taking Supplements Safely
It's never a good idea to start an herbal supplement for energy, or anything else, without talking to your doctor if you're on any other medications. Always follow the dosage suggested on the bottle or by a trusted herbalist, and remember to wait a few months before you decide that an herbal remedy isn't working for you.
Because herbs are natural, they work more slowly than synthetic drugs, so you might not see an improvement right away. Given time however, one of these remedies may well give you the energy boost you need.
