The Power of Positive Scent
The idea that inhaling a pleasant aroma will lead to health benefits is not a new one. Ancient Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians were familiar with the concept of using fragrant plants as part of their religious ceremonies, for medical purposes, and to make cosmetics.
Modern Aromatherapy
What we know as "aromatherapy" can be traced back to 1910. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French scholar and chemist, discovered that lavender oil can heal first-hand. Gattefosse burned his hand very badly while conducting an experiment at a perfume plant. Looking for relief from the pain of the injury, he plunged his hand into the closest container of liquid. The tub was filled with lavender essential oil.
He was very impressed with how quickly the burn healed and how little scarring there was. Gattefosse then turned his attention to studying lavender oil and other essential oils. Essential oils were used to treated wounded soldiers in World War I and Gattefosse was pleased with the results of his experiments. He published a book in 1928 entitled, 'Aromatherapie' and this is how the use of essential oils to heal was associated with this term.
Votive Candles
Votive candles are small. cylinder-shaped candles that measure approximately 2.5 inches x 1.5 inches, or 6 cm x 4 cm. They are designed to be used with a small glass container, since they melt into oil after being lit.
Votive candles are relatively safe, since they are used with a glass container, and will burn for between five and eight hours. Be sure not to place lit candles near drapes or in places where pets or children have access to them.
You also need to be aware that when a votive candle is lit; the glass container gets quite hot. The hot oil can also cause a severe burn. If you try to pick it up shortly after extinguishing the flame, you could burn your hand. Wait until the glass has cooled down before deciding to pick it up after you have enjoyed the lit candles instead, or choose one location in the room where you will place your candles and leave them there.
