How to Mix Essential Oils

Mixing essential oils is not a difficult process. It is important to always use clean droppers and store your newly mixed oils in dark, glass bottles. Clear bottles allow ultraviolet rays to interact with the oils and often change or weaken them. It is also important to wash your hands before mixing oils so that the oils are not contaminated.

Once you have chosen the oils to mix, you should carefully count the drops into the carrier oil. When the mixture is finished, cap it carefully with a clean jar lid and store in a cool, dark place.

Items You Will Need

  • Dark glass jars for each mixture
  • Glass droppers for each oil
  • Carrier oil
    • Almond
    • Apricot kernel
    • Olive
    • Coconut
  • Measuring spoons

Dilutions for Specific Uses

  • 1 percent dilution is used for children under ten, pregnant or nursing women, or people who are frail. Mix four drops of essential oil with four teaspoons carrier oil of choice.
  • 2.5 percent dilution is used for massage therapy and general health. Measure four teaspoons of carrier oil into a bottle and add ten drops of essential oil.
  • 5 percent dilutions are for pain relief and other intense problems. Mix four teaspoons of carrier oil with twenty drops of essential oil.

Once you have mixed your oils, shake vigorously to blend.

Mixing Your Own Aromatherapy Oils for Specific Benefits

The whole point of mixing your own aromatherapy oils is to create a personalized product. Therefore it is important to know the different properties of the essential oils. Some are energizing, some are relaxing, and some will uplift mood. By studying these properties, you can learn to make a mixture that smells good as well as helps you feel better.

Ideally, you should have a mixture of three essential oils to create a top note, middle note and base note. These terms describe the way that the scents are identified by your body. The top note is smelled first and is usually the lightest scent. It is followed by the middle notes which are more intense. When they wear off, the last scent lingers for a long time. The way that these scents are blended will give the oil complexity.
