Watch Your Diet
Cut the salt. Restrict your intake of salt to less than half a teaspoon a day. Pay attention to salt content of your meals and snacks. You should avoid baking powder as well, as it contains sodium carbonate.
Lose the fat – saturated fat, that is. Substitute saturated animal fats such as butter and lard with unsaturated vegetable oils like olive, mustard, canola and sunflower oil. There are also a number of spreads available specifically developed to replace saturated fats for cooking and spreading.
Bulk up on the fiber. A diet that is high in fiber has been proven to help lower blood pressure. High fiber breakfast cereal and whole grain foods are one way to take fiber. You should also eat fruit and vegetables, such as broccoli and corn, that are high in fiber.
Chow Down the Veggies
It is notable that vegetarians have significantly lower blood pressure than the general population. Fresh, juicy fruit and raw vegetables are the ideal form in which to take your vegetables to remedy high blood pressure. Here are a few other tips on using vegetables as a remedy for high blood pressure:
Eat celery. This vegetable is high in phytochemicals that not only help reduce blood pressure but also lower stress hormones, which tend to constrict the arteries. In particular, it is rich in 3-N-butylphthalide, a phytochemical that is unique to celery and gives it its distinctive scent.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent arterial damage caused by free radicals. Citrus fruit is rich in this vitamin, as are strawberries, sweet red peppers, cabbage, cantaloupe, tomatoes and kiwi fruit. You can use lemon juice to make your raw vegetables more palatable.
Vitamin B folate lowers the levels of homocysteine in the blood, a compound believed to be responsible for hardening the arteries. Beans, asparagus and Brussels sprouts are rich in Folate. Fortified cereals and breads are another source.
Potassium-rich fruits and vegetables help lower blood pressure. These include: bananas, raisins, spinach, cantaloupe, orange juice, dried apricots, winter squash and boiled potatoes and potato skin.
Although it can be a potentially dangerous condition, a few natural remedies for high blood pressure can help you efficiently manage it. As always, you must use any remedies in consultation with your doctor or other licensed health care practitioner.
