Quick Homemade Acne Remedy
From LoveToKnow Herbs
With all of the commercial products on the market, you may wonder if there really is a quick homemade acne remedy that works. Like so many other cosmetics and medications that are commercially made, these remedies are full of chemicals and things that actually decrease the skin’s ability to fight bacteria, resulting in more pimples than ever. While there are many external remedies that will help clear up pimples, it is vitally important to eat a healthy diet and drink lots of pure water daily.
Facial Masks
Masks are one of the easiest ways to make a quick homemade acne remedy. They are all made of different ingredients, and are all used externally. It is important to keep the mask away from the eye area, and rinse the masks off with warm, not hot, water. Always follow the facial with a natural, oil free moisturizer.
Oatmeal Mask
Oatmeal is very soothing to the skin, and this oatmeal mask helps to draw out the impurities, as well as decrease swollen, red areas around pimples.
- 1 c dry, organic oatmeal, mixed in a blender until it is a powder
- 1/4 c raw honey
- 1 tbs rose water
- 3 drops lavender essential oil
- 1 tbs culinary lavender buds
- 1 egg white, beaten until frothy
Mix all of the ingredients together until a paste is formed. Add a little more oatmeal, or a little more honey to get the right consistency. Spread the mask on the face and allow it to remain for 20 minutes. Wash off with warm water. This is a gentle mask that can be used daily.
Clay Mask
Clay is available in a powdered form in two main types:
- Fullers earth is a type of clay with high magnesium oxide content
- French green clay is very gentle for inflamed skin
Either works in the following recipe. If the mask is going to be used more than once or twice a week then the French clay would be the better choice.
- 1 tbs clay
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 c strong chamomile tea infusion
Add enough of the chamomile tea to make a thick paste. Spread the mixture on the skin and allow it to dry for 25 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.
Tomato Mask
- 1 ripe tomato
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- ¼ c oatmeal blended to a powder
- 3 drops rosemary essential oil
Blend all ingredients until just combined and spread on the face. Allow to dry for ten minutes and then rinse off with warm water and pat dry.
Egg and Lavender Mask
- 1 egg white, beaten until frothy
- 2 tbs honey
- 2 tbs plain yogurt
- 1 tsp Vitamin E oil
- 2 drops lavender essential oil
Blend all together and spread the mask on your face. Allow to dry for 30 minutes and then rise thoroughly with warm water. Pat dry.
Natural Astringents
An astringent works to cleanse and close the pores, protecting them from being clogged by dirt and oil. Most of the chemical astringents that are commercially available are harsh and hard on the skin. Any of the following may be used with good results on acne prone skin.
Refreshing Astringent
- 1 tbs chamomile flowers
- 1 tbs peppermint leaves
- 1 tbs cider vinegar
- 3 tbs witch hazel
- 2 c pure water
- 5 drops tea tree oil
Bring water to a boil and remove from heat. Steep the chamomile and peppermint in the water for ten minutes and then strain. Allow to come to room temperature and add the vinegar, the witch hazel, and the tea tree oil. To use, saturate a cotton ball with the mixture and wipe over face after cleansing.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a fantastic astringent and toner for oily skin. Just rub the gel over the face, no need to rinse unless it feels sticky.
Lemon Juice
Mix the juice of a lemon with two cups of pure water, and one tablespoon rosewater. Saturate a cotton ball with the solution and rub over face to refresh the skin, and remove oil.
Cleansing
Cleansing the face gently in the morning and evening will help the skin to stay looking its best. Scrubs are generally too coarse to use on acne but the following cleanser is gentle and can be used each time you cleanse your skin. Be sure to make this in small batches and refrigerate in a covered container for up to two days.
Almond Skin Cleanser
- 1 c raw almonds
- 2 tbs. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. lemon juice
- A few drops of calendula oil
Blend almonds in the blender until they are finely ground. Add the rest of the ingredients and whip until thickened. Dampen face with warm water and smooth mixture over it in gentle, circular motions. Rinse thoroughly.
Quick Homemade Acne Remedy Ingredients
There are so many different ingredients that can be used in acne remedies that it can get confusing. While you need no special equipment for these recipes, a spice mill herb grinder is a good way to grind up small quantities of herbs easily. Here is a list of some of the different items most often used:
- Calendula- soothing and healing, anti-inflammatory
- Lavender- prevents scars, antibacterial, healing
- Tea Tree Oil- antibacterial, healing
- Lemon- drying, clarifying
- Buttermilk- healing, moisturizing
- Almond- healing, cleansing
- Witch hazel- Astringent, drying
- Clay- draws impurities from the skin
- Honey-healing
- Tomato-astringent, drying, balances pH levels
- Rosewater-moisturizing, healing, cleansing
- Oatmeal- sloughs off old skin cells
Super-Fast Pimple Remedy
For a pimple that has become infected try using an Earl Grey teabag as a poultice. Make yourself a cup of tea and save the warm teabag, pressing it against the lesion for twenty minutes. This can be done several times a day for fast results.
Remember that using organic herbal remedies are the best choice. Many commercially prepared herbs are sprayed with chemicals and pesticides so try to find organics whenever possible.
Using these remedies in conjunction with a healthy diet can significantly improve the health of your skin in a short period of time. If the problem persists consult your naturopath for further advice. A quick homemade acne remedy is good to have on hand, but remember that sometimes acne can point to a deeper nutritional issue.
